What Is Bazi? – Your Four Pillars of Destiny Explained
Have you ever felt that some years everything goes smoothly, while in others you hit one obstacle after another? Or that certain people naturally “get” you, while others clash with you for no obvious reason?
In traditional Chinese metaphysics, these patterns are not random. They can be read from your Bazi – also called the Four Pillars of Destiny.
What Does “Bazi” Mean?
Ba (八) = eight
Zi (字) = characters
Bazi literally means “eight characters.” These eight characters are your birthday and birth time written in the ancient Chinese sexagesimal calendar.
Your Bazi looks something like this:
Year Pillar: Jia Chen
Month Pillar: Bing Yin
Day Pillar: Geng Wu
Hour Pillar: Ren Xu
Each pillar has two characters – a Heavenly Stem (upper) and an Earthly Branch (lower). Four pillars × two characters = eight characters.
Together, these eight characters form a unique energy blueprint of the exact moment you took your first breath.
The Two Layers of Bazi
1. The Heavenly Stems (十干)
Ten Stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui.
Each Stem is tied to Yin/Yang and one of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water).
- Jia / Yi → Wood
- Bing / Ding → Fire
- Wu / Ji → Earth
- Geng / Xin → Metal
- Ren / Gui → Water
The Stem tells us what quality of energy you received.
2. The Earthly Branches (十二支)
Twelve Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai.
Each Branch contains a hidden combination of Stems. The Branch also represents an animal sign (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig).
The Branch tells us how that energy expresses itself – its season, direction, and relationships with other Branches (such as clashes, harms, or combinations).

Why Does Your Bazi Matter?
Your Bazi is not a fixed fate that chains you down. Instead, think of it as your personal weather pattern.
- If your Bazi has strong Wood energy, you are naturally creative, kind, and expanding – like a growing tree.
- If your Bazi has strong Metal energy, you are sharp, organised, and disciplined – like a finely forged blade.
- If your Bazi lacks Fire, you may feel low energy or struggle with enthusiasm – like a cloudy day with no sun.
Knowing your Bazi helps you:
- Understand your natural strengths and weaknesses – stop fighting your nature, and work with it instead.
- Choose better timing – some years are good for starting a business (a “wealth year”), others are better for resting (a “resource year”).
- Improve relationships – compare your Bazi with a partner, friend, or colleague to see where you harmonise or clash, and how to navigate differences.
- Enhance your environment – use Feng Shui, colors, crystals, or even Taoist talismans (Fulu) to balance missing elements in your chart.
A Simple Example: Your Day Master
In Bazi reading, the Day Pillar represents you. The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is called your Day Master.
For example, if your Day Master is Bing Fire (a Yang Fire day), you are likely warm, expressive, generous, and sometimes impulsive – like a campfire that brightens a room but can burn too brightly.
If your Day Master is Ji Earth (a Yin Earth day), you are stable, nurturing, detail‑oriented, and a little slow to change – like the rich soil of a farm field.
Once you know your Day Master, you can begin to understand why certain jobs, hobbies, or even foods make you feel alive – while others drain you.
Is Bazi Fortune‑Telling? Does It Take Away Free Will?
No. Bazi is not fortune‑telling in the sense of “this will 100% happen, you have no choice.”
A good Bazi reading is like looking at a map before a road trip. The map shows you mountains, rivers, and possible detours – but you still choose which road to take, how fast to drive, and when to rest.
Bazi reveals tendencies and opportunities, not iron chains. A person with a “difficult” Bazi can still live a happy, successful life by making wiser decisions. A person with a “lucky” Bazi can ruin everything through arrogance and laziness.

How Does Nature & Tao Use Bazi?
At Nature & Tao, we combine Bazi wisdom with our products:
- Based on your missing element, we can recommend a specific Fulu talisman, crystal bracelet, or Bagua pendant to gently balance your energy.
- For those who know their Day Master, we offer colour and material suggestions – for example, a Water Day Master may benefit from Metal (white, silver, round shapes) to strengthen their career luck.
You do not need to be a Bazi master. But understanding your eight characters is like learning the rhythm of your own song – once you hear it, you can dance instead of stumble.
Final Thought: Know Your Blueprint, Then Live Freely
Your Bazi is the energy you were born with – neither good nor bad, just different.
A rose seed and an oak seed both grow beautifully, but they need different soil, sunlight, and water. Bazi tells you what kind of “seed” you are. Then you choose your garden.
That is the Taoist way: first understand nature (including your own nature), then flow with it.
